The terms of the Contest

GENERAL REGULATIONS

Historical-Literary Prize of “David Agmashenebeli” of All Georgia is given on the basis of open creative contest.

The Aim of the Contest is: to deepen public interest towards literary works on historical topics and the history of Georgia, review of the life of distinguished patriots and showing of their role.

THE TASK OF THE CONTEST:

— Raising the prestige of Georgian literature, widening its social importance and moral-ethical content;

— Driving the attention of wide strata of readers towards the history of Georgia, further improvement of patriotic upbringing of a young generation;

— Revealing and popularizing highly artistic literary works and scientific studies, reflecting the history of Georgia;

— Immortalizing the memory of historical figures, underlining and recognizing nationally their contribution into the development of Georgian state.

Historical-Literary Prize of “David Agmashenebeli” of All Georgia is awarded to the winners of the Contest annually, on February 8, on the day of the commemoration of David Agmashenebeli.

THE PRIZE-AWARDING COMMISSION

The Prize-awarding Commission is its public representative body, whose scope includes the evaluation of the application about participation in the Contest, identification of laureates, and making technical and working amendments into the Regulations.

The Prize-awarding Commission consists of 5 constant members, who are nominated by the founder of the Prize, and also by temporary members, who are invited by the Head of the Commission for participation in the working of the Commission.

The Chairman and Co-chairman of the Commission are elected by the majority of the votes of the members of the Commission on the basis of agreement with the founder of the Prize. They are responsible for the organization of the work of the Commission, conduct meetings personally or with the assistance of deputies and participate in the ceremony of awarding of the winners.

With the agreement with the members of the Commission, the Commission appoints from its staff the executive secretary, whose responsibility is to organize the issues connected with the activities of the Commission.

The prize-awarding Commission regularly disseminates the information regarding its work and future events.

REGULATIONS REGARDING THE CONTESTS OF HISTORICAL-LITERARY WORKS

Private persons, creative unions, publishing houses and other organizations, which are connected with literary, journalistic and editorial activities have the right of submission of the works to the Contest. The works of the authors deceased in the XXI century are also accepted for the Contest of 2010-2011.

The works in the volume of not less than 5 (five) conditionally printed pages can be presented at the Contest. The works should be devoted to a historical figure, or should reflect the combating spirit for the national ideals of Georgia, also important issues of strengthening of Georgian statehood.

The work of any genre (scientific work, research, essay, prose, poetry, drama, etc.), which satisfies the conditions of the contest, is openly published not later than 3 months before the awarding of the Prize, and covers the period of the history of Georgia from ancient times to 1945, is accepted for examination.

For the submission to the Contest, the published works should be sent (or handed) before December 8, 2010 to the Office of Georgian Branch of the World Congress of Nations of Georgia at the address: No. 3, A. Griboedov St., Tbilisi 0118 (Tel: 983676; 921514) with the inscription: “The Prize of David Agmashenebeli”, in two copies. The application and form of an author (authors) should also be included.

All works accepted to the Contest get the evaluation of the review group. The formation of the review group is carried out by the Prize-awarding Commission and functions in accordance with the regulations on the review group. Reviews are neither published, nor sent to the participants of the Contest.

THE REVIEW GROUP

The Review Group is a consultative body, which reviews and analyzes the works submitted for the Contest. It elaborates and submits to the Prize-awarding Commission the recommendations about future laureates.

The composition of the reviewers group defines the Prize-awarding Commission of All-Georgia David Agmashenebeli Historical-Literary Prize. The group consists of 5 members. It comprises critics in literature and history. The reviewers group is created for the period of current competition.

IDENTIFYING THE LAUREATES OF THE CONTEST

The laureates of the Prize are identified in two stages. At the first stage on the basis of the conclusions made by the reviewers group and the opinion of the Prize-awarding Commission through open voting, out of the candidates who have submitted their works a short list consisting of nine competitors for becoming laureates is made. At the second stage by the simple majority of the Prize-awarding Commission, through open voting the laureates of the first, second and third Prizes are identified.

Not later than one week before the official handing to the Prize the Prize-awarding Commission announces the composition of the selected list of laureates and the names of the winners in nominations: “History of Literature”, “Historical Science”, “A Work on David Agmashenebeli”, “History for the Youth”, “Carers of the Nation”, “Popularization of the History of Georgia Abroad”. If the Commission decides so nominations can be added or changed.

The names of the first, second and third Prizes is announced at a press-conference which is held before the Prize handing ceremony. The first three Prizes can be awarded to a work of any genre according to its artistic and historical value. By the decision of the Commission the Prize fund of the first three Prizes can be combined together and can be equally distributed among several laureates. In such a case the awarded Prize to each author is considered as the First Degree Prize of David Agmashenebeli.

SPECIAL PRIZE FOR JOURNALISTS

A special Prize for the journalists “Companion-in-writing” is awarded to a journalist whose contribution in the popularization of the history of Georgia, increasing its prestige and the development of historical thinking is particular.

THE PRIZE FUND

The Prize Fund constitutes 95 000 GEL.

The First Prize - 25 000 GEL

The Second Prize – 20 000 GEL

The Third Prize – 15 000 GEL

The Prize of the winners in nominations constitutes 5000 GEL for each winner.

The journalist who will be awarded the Special Prize “Companion-in-writing” is awarded a monetary Prize in the amount of 5000 GEL.

The Prize Fund is a private donation and is given after the payment of relevant income tax.

PRIZE HANDING TO CEREMONY

The Prize handing to ceremony is connected with the Saint David Agmashenebeli Commemoration Day which is annually marked on February 8.

The venue of the Prize handing to ceremony is defined by the Commission on the basis of an agreement with the founder of the Prize.

The expenses connected with the Prize handing to Ceremony, as well as other expenses connected with the Prize-awarding are covered by the Founder of the Prize.

The author can be awarded the First Degree Historical-Literary Prize - “David Agmashenebeli”- only once.
