General Regulations

All-Georgian Historical-Literary Prize David Agmashenebeli is issued on the basis of open creative contest.

The objective of the Contest is: to deepen the interest of the society towards the literary works on the history of Georgia, to highlight the lives of merited patriots of   the country and reveal their role. 

The task of the Contest is:

To raise the prestige of the Georgian literature, widen its social and moral-ethnic significance.

To deepen the attention of the wide groups of people towards the history of Georgia, to further improve the patriotic bringing up of the young generation.

To reveal high quality literary work depicted the history of Georgia and its popularization;

To immortalize historical figures, to mark their contribution in the development of Georgian State and their common acknowledgement by the public. 

All-Georgian Historical-Literary Prize David Agmashenebeli will be awarded to the winners of the Contest annually, on February 8, the Remembrance Day of Saint David the Builder.

The Commission awarding the prize

 The Commission awarding the Prize is its public representative body, its responsibility is to consider the applications to the Contest, define the laureates and make technical or working amendments to the Regulations. 

The Prize awarding Commission is comprised of 5 permanent members who are nominated by the founders of the prize and also of temporary members who are invited by the Chairman of the Commission for the participation in the work of Commission.

The election of the Commission Chairman and the Co-Chairman is carried out by the majority of voices of the Commission members on the basis of an agreement with the founders of the Prize. They are responsible for the arrangement of the Commission work, personally or through their deputies hold meetings and participate in the awarding ceremony of the winners. 

On the basis of the agreement with the Commission members the Commission appoints out of its members an Executive Secretary whose responsibility is the arrangement of all issues connected with the work of the Commission.

The Prize awarding Commission regularly disseminates the information about its work and future activities and events.

Regulations Concerning the Contest of Historical-Literary Works

Any private person, Creative Unions, Publishing houses and other organizations connected with the literary, journalistic and editing activities,   have the right to submit their works to the Contest.

Any work comprising no less than 5 (five) conventional printed pages can be submitted to the Contest. The work shall be dedicated to a historical figure, or shall be describing the aspiration to the fight for the Georgian national-state ideals.

For consideration shall be admitted those works which meet the requirements of the Contest, are published no earlier than 3 years before the Prize awarding and covers the period of  history of Georgia from ancient times until the middle of the last century.

The works intended for the submission to the Contest shall be sent (or brought) to the Georgian Branch Office of the World Congress of the Nations of Georgia before December 15, 2009 at the address – Tbilisi 0177, Al. Kazbegi Avenue N 29, with the inscription – David Agmashenebeli prize”, in two copies, as well as a form of request and the author’s (authors’) form.

All works admitted to the Contest is evaluated by the Reviewers Group. The reviewers Group is formed by the Prize Awarding Commission and operates in accordance with the regulations on the Reviewers Group. Reviews are not published and are not sent to the Contest participants.

Reviewers Group

Reviewers Group is a consultative body which reviews and analyses the works submitted to the Contest. It develops and submits to the Prize Awarding Commission recommendations about the future laureates.

The composition of the Reviewers group is defined by the All-Georgian Historical-Literary Prize – David Agmashenebeli - Awarding Commission. The group consists of 5 members. The group is comprised of literary critics and historians. The Reviewers group is established for the current Contest period.

Defining the Laureates of the Prize

Defining the Prize laureates is carried out in two stages. At the first stage on the basis of the conclusions and considerations of the Reviewers Group and Prize Awarding Commission, through open ballot, a selection list is created of the candidates who submitted for the prize, which comprises 9 seekers for the Contest laureates. At the second stage by the majority of the Prize Awarding Commission, through open ballot, the first second and third laureates of the Contest are defined. 

Not later than one week before the Prize handing over ceremony, the Prize Awarding Commission declares the composition of the selected laureates.

The names of the laureates of the First, Second and the Third Prizes  is declared at the Prize Awarding ceremony.

Special Prize for Journalists

Special Prize for Journalists “Tanamokalme” shall be given to a journalist, who has a particular contribution in the popularization of the history of Georgia, in increasing its prestige, in the development of cultural and historical thinking.

The Prize Fund

The Prize Fund constitutes 95 000 GEL.

The First Prize – 25 000 GEL

The Second Prize – 20 000 GEL

The Third Prize – 15 000 GEL

The laureates of the first three prizes will be awarded in addition with the memorable medals with the portrayal of Saint David Agmashenebeli.

The Prize of the laureates that were included in the selected list constitutes 5 000 GEL for each.

The journalist, who will be awarded the special Prize “Tanamokalme”, will be awarded 5 000 GEL.

Prize Awarding Ceremony

The handing over the Prize is connected with the Remembrance Day of Saint David the Builder which is annually marked on February 8.

The venue of the handing over the Prize is defined by the Commission in agreement with the founders of the Prize.

The expenses connected with the handing over the Prize, also other expenses connected with the Prize awarding and their costs are covered by the Prize establishers.

The First Degree Historical-Literary prize – David Agmashenebeli – is given to the author only once.
